Matches From the Mind Vol. 7

Thursday, December 31st, 2009
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the REM arena. Today, you will witness what we have deemed “The Match That Should’ve Been, But Never Was.” One man is Wrestling’s ultimate icon. He is the epitome of the fame every wrestler wants to attain; he is the Immortal Hulk Hogan! And his opponent, a former King of the Ring, 2 time Intercontinental Champion, 6 time WWE Champion, and the toughest SOB ever in the WWE. He is Stone Cold Steve Austin. After a backstage argument prevented this scheduled match to take place Austin was replaced with The Rock, leaving fans to wonder “what if.” Well no more! Now if you want me stop talking and get the match started gimme a Hell Yeah! Ring the Bell!

As you would expect the match doesn’t start up like it normally would. Austin doesn’t waste anytime going after Hogan, hitting with a kick to the mid-section, and following up with some viscous punches. He backs The Hulkster into the turnbuckle, and continues to pound on him. The referee gets Austin out of the corner. As Steve walks back to his adversary he’s met with a big right hand from Hogan. Hogan continues to throw the fists until he backs Austin into he ropes. He throws Austin off the ropes, and hits him with a crooked arm lariat on the rebound. Hogan goes for a cover, but it’s a short two count. He brings Austin to his feet, and hits him with some body shots. He hit’s a big body blow that doubles over The Texas Rattlesnake. Hogan launches himself off the ropes, and hit’s a running knee lift. Hogan takes advantage of the stunned Austin, and slaps on a sleeper hold. Stone Cold struggles as he’s wrapped up in the 24-inch pythons of his adversary. The never say die attitude of Austin pays off for him as he manages to grab a hold of a rope. Hogan is forced to release the hold. Stone Cold doesn’t take any time to catch his breath, but instead lays a back elbow smash into Hogan’s head, as soon as he is released. As Hogan turns around to retaliate, The Bionic Redneck lifts him flapjack style, and drops him throat first on the ring rope. Austin covers, but it’s only a two.

Austin commences to stomping the living daylights out his opponent. The referee tells him to back off and he does…for a moment. As soon as the ref gets out of his path he goes right back to stomping the Immortal One. The ref tells him to knock it off, and he does…for a moment. Once more Stone Cold stomps on Hogan. This time the ref threatens a disqualification. Austin then stands over his beaten opponent. He stands at his adversary’s head, and looks around the arena. He smirks, that Austin smirk, then mocks Hogan by twirling his wrist, and cupping his ear to which the crowd chants “WHAT?” He does this to all four sides of the audience, and bounces off the rope to hit Hogan’s signature Leg Drop. Austin covers again, but it’s no good. Austin brings his opponent to his feet, and hit’s a European uppercut. Austin throws The Hulkster into the ropes, and prepares for a back body drop. Hogan stops short, and kicks him in the chest. Hogan follows up with a clothesline, and then another, and then another. Finally he back body drops Austin. He looks at the crowd, and gets them pumped. He launches Austin into the ropes, but when he comes back Hogan is met with a Thesz press, and his opponents fists.

Austin gets on the second rope, and poses for the crowd. They can’t help but cheer both men. Stone Cold walks back over to his fallen adversary and drops an elbow on him, followed by another. Austin goes to the second rope once more, and jumps for a pointed elbow drop, but Hogan moves. As Austin gets back to his feet, holding his arm, Hogan puts an abdominal stretch on him. You can see the pain in Austin’s face from the stretch. He tries to get out of it but he can’t. As Hulk continues to hold the submission he starts hitting the exposed rib cage of his opponent with massive clubbing blows. Finally he releases Austin, but takes him back down with a snap mare. From there he puts a rear chin lock on Austin, complete with a knee in the back. Hogan realizes he can’t out brawl The Texas Rattlesnake, so he’s going to have to get a bit more technical than he’s used to. Hogan cranks the hold, but Austin manages to slowly work his way up to his feet. He hits Hogan in the stomach with a few side elbow shots. He pushes Hogan off of him, and tries for a clothesline on the rebounding adversary. However, Hogan ducks to pull and switch and go behind, resulting in him controlling a rear waist lock on Austin. Then Hogan lifts him into the air, and arches his back to hit German suplex. Something we don’t really see from Hogan too much. Hogan pins his opponent, but Austin gets a foot on the ropes.

Things don’t look good for Austin who’s holding his neck. Hogan brings Austin up and sends him into the corner. He hit’s The Rattlesnake with a clothesline in the corner. He sends Austin into the other corner hard enough it knocks him to the ground. Hogan takes advantage and locks on the Camel Clutch. He wrenches on the hold, nearly breaking Austin’s back. Austin is able to get one of his feet on the ropes. Lucky he was near the turnbuckle. Hogan brings up his adversary and tries for a suplex, but Austin drops behind and rolls up Hogan with a schoolboy for a two. Hogan recovers and goes for a clothesline, but misses. When he turns around Stone Cold greets him with a kick to the gut, and tries for a Stunner. Hulk pushes him into the ropes though, and when he comes back catches him in a bear hug. The Hulkster’ 24 inch pythons squeeze as hard as they can around Austin’s torso. He holds him there, and doesn’t budge. The Bionic Redneck gets up enough strength to clap his opponent’s head. He does it a second time and the grip loosens. A third time breaks the hold. Austin follows up by taking Hogan down with a big lariat. Austin bounces off the ropes, does a little taunt, and drops a pointed elbow on Hogan. He grabs a hold of The Hulkster’s legs, and drags him to where they are lined up with the turnbuckle. Stone Cold keeps a hold of the legs and falls backwards, catapulting Hogan into the corner. Austin gets up, and walks over to his battered rival.

He grabs the head of his nemesis, and starts ramming it into the turnbuckle. He trash talks Hogan while he’s doing it. Suddenly it seems as though they aren’t taking affect anymore. Austin keeps slamming the head in to the corner, but they only see to invigorate Hogan. Hogan moves out of the corner on his own accord as Austin continues to beat on him, shaking, as he’s Hulking up. Then Hogan points a finger at Austin, and yells, in unison with the crowd, “YOU!” Austin throws a punch, but it’s blocked. Hogan fires back with three big rights until Stone Cold is backed in to the ropes. He sends Austin into the opposite ropes, and hits him with the Big Boot. Hogan is now the one twirling his wrist, and cupping his hand. He bounces off the ropes, jumps into the air, and hit’s The Atomic Leg Drop on to Austin’s injured neck. 1…2…3! Wait no! Austin manages, by the slightest of margins, to get a shoulder up off the mat. Maybe that wouldn’t have happened if an exhausted Hogan had hooked the leg. Regardless Hogan is stunned. He’s not sure what to do, so he goes off the ropes for another one. He took to long to get his bearings though, as Austin moves out of the way just in time. Austin hangs on to the ropes, and tries to pull himself up in the corner. Meanwhile Hulk charges toward him, but The Texas Rattlesnake moves out of the way. As Hogan staggers back towards him, he nails a high impact delayed spine buster, and covers for the two.

Austin goes to whip Hogan into the ropes. But Hogan half reverses it to where he’s behind Austin, and hits an Atomic Drop. Hogan bounces off the ropes, and nails Austin with another crooked arm lariat. Hogan brings Austin up, and hit’s a BIG body slam. He covers for a two. Hogan lays in some elbow drops, and then a standing Bonzai drop, which is also good for a two. The Hulkster brings Stone Cold to a standing position. He Gorilla Presses him, and lets him fall behind. Then he bounces off the ropes, and hit’s a big splash. Another pin fall, another two. Hogan starts to stomp away at Austin forcing him towards the turnbuckle. He lifts Austin up so he can continue to pound him. However, after a punch Austin doesn’t seem fazed. Another and The Rattlesnake just looks at Hogan. One more, and Austin walks out of the corner with his head bobbing, yelling something inaudible. Austin is Hulking up. Hogan continues to throw punches, though futile, at Austin. Austin flips off Hogan with hand while yelling at him. Hogan throws one more punch that is blocked by Austin, who follows up with one punch, two punch, and before the third one flips off Hogan again, and then hits him with a third one. He sends Hogan into the ropes, and when he comes back Stone Cold kicks him in the mid-section, and hit’s the stunner. 1…2…NO! Hogan barely kicks out.

Austin brings up his adversary, and locks in a old move of his, The Million Dollar Dream. He holds it as best he can, but eventually Hulk is able to reach the ropes. No rests for the weary though as Austin follows up with a Russian leg sweep. Hogan tries to pull himself up in the corner, but as soon as he reaches a vertical base Stone Cold Steve Austin is right on him with kicks to the gut. The ref tries to call off Austin, but he continues to stomp away at Hogan, eventually getting him down into a seated position in the corner. The ref keeps telling Austin to back off, and he does…long enough to get in the referee’s face. He goes back to stomping a mud hole in Hogan, but it doesn’t seem to be hurting The Immortal One. He starts to get reinvigorated again. Austin continues his stomping. Hogan slowly brings himself back up. Hogan points at Austin, and once more in unison with the crowd yells “YOU!” Austin tries to continue stomping, but Hogan catches the leg, and lays in three big rights hands. He sends him into the ropes, and gets the leg up for the big boot. Austin has other ideas as he catches the leg. He looks as Hogan, and responds with an emphatic “Ahn-Ah”. Austin swings the leg, and when Hogan comes back around he nails him in the gut with a kick, and hits another Stone Cold Stunner. Austin covers. 1…2…3! Austin wins, Austin wins.

Well I thought that was pretty good. It was a good match we haven’t seen before, and probably never will again. That’s all for this week. Thank you for reading, now…GET OUTTA MY HEAD!!!!!

Business Consultancy One Stop Shop Online Retailers Grow In Popularity, From The Art Of Business War By Dr. Mark D. Yates

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009
As a business consultant at www.businessconsultancyonestopshop.com I am frequently questioned about how online retailers grow in popularity when conventional well known retail high street favourites are closing down at an alarming rate. I believe we can refer back to Sun Tzu’s strategies which I have incorporated into my business consultancy practice ‘the art of business war.’

Dr. Mark D. Yates from "business consultancy one stop shop" believes the answer is simple. online retailers grow in popularity because they are flexible enough to address the current needs of contemporary shoppers. The art of business war advocates flexibility in all things related to business. Dr. Mark D. Yates continues, for example the young shoppers of today have been brought up with computers and the internet being part of their daily lives. They have confidence in online shopping which member of the older generations have yet to fully embrace.

That said with ‘Silver Surfers’ being the fastest growing demographic to embrace computers and the Internet that is slowly changing. Added security features implemented by larger e-commerce businesses to reduce online fraudulent activities has also helped fuel the online retailers grow in popularity.

Many of the major online web site businesses have worked closely with a business consultant who specialises in fraud reduction and who is classed as a security expert in e-commerce trading. Another reason why online retailers grow in popularity is because of the sheer explosion in online selling. Dr. Mark D. Yates from "Business Consultancy One Stop Shop states; with on-line retail spending due to reach £42.4bn by 2012 its no wonder online retailers grow in popularity, especially in the midst of the current economic downturn.

E-commerce online shopping is particularly popular among younger men, with just over a fifth of men under 35 (22%) choosing Amazon online store as their favourite place to shop.

Dr. Mark D. Yates explains, another reason for why online retailers grow in popularity is because of the sheer convenience of online shopping. Business e-commerce web sites are being produced to cater for this convenience. For example pconestopshop.com, asecurityonestopshop.com and businessconsultancyonestopshop.com offer shoppers a pleasurable shopping experience which follows the ‘Harrods Shopping Experience.’ i.e. A huge range of multiple products from multiple suppliers & manufacturers all offered under the one roof at a fraction of High Street prices & overheads. All available from the comfort of your home or office desktop computer.

Analyst TNS Worldpanel conducted its annual poll which states, online retailers could outstrip the popularity of high street giants if current trends continue and If they do, we will see a lot more online retailers overtake more traditional high street retailers. Old high street favourites such as Woolworths and Zavvi, both of whom are planning to re-launch as online brands.

TNS polled 15,000 people during the 52 weeks to January 4, 2009. The top 10 retailers from one to 10 were: Tesco, Amazon, Asda, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, Argos, Sainsbury’s, Debenhams, Morrisons, eBay, all of whom have a very strong internet site presence.

Dr. Mark D. Yates business consultant at Business Consultancy One Stop Shop states; the art of business war identifies researching your customers current needs and then servicing those needs expodiciously. E-commerce does just that. if this doesn’t demonstrate why online retailers grow in popularity then I don’t know what will.

Kredit: Demand for Credit Amongst Pensioners Rises Sharply

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
Until recently pensioners in Germany would have found it very difficult to get credit. Collectively, the obstacles placed in the way of applicants are known as “Risikobegrenzung” and they represent a strategy of risk management designed to protect credit providers from bad debt. However, in the past decade, lenders have became increasingly interested in courting this formerly ostracized group. This is because pensioners in Germany (despite many a pessimistic prognosis) still enjoy regular incomes (often from interest payments from their properties). The security offered by property ownership is very reassuring for lenders.

More and more German pensioners are looking to finance their retirement ambitions through credit. This is not surprising when one considers increases in life expectancy and the shifting profile of the population as a whole. In any case it is often hard to find the time during the typical working life to get to do everything one might want to do. Many pensioners feel they deserve a Caribbean cruise or new car to brighten their latter years and the petulance of banks in denying them this is increasingly being swept aside.

For the German Rentner to obtain Kredit he must be able to demonstrate a monthly income. This would clearly need to be sufficient to cover the repayments. Another requirement is Schufa approval, Schufa being the German credit check agency which monitors and regulates all credit transactions in the Federal Republic.

The age of the applicant is nonetheless an important factor from the bank’s perspective when it comes to the crunch. Each Kredit provider considers this along with the sum being applied for and the desired repayment schedule on an individual basis. Even a vigorous Tom Jones (68), for example, would discover that it’s not unusual for old age pensioners to be denied Kredit after their 65th birthday. Normally all monies have to be repaid by the 68th birthday. Of course these policies continue to restrict the financial plans of our venerable hordes and seem odd when so many are living healthily into their 70s and beyond.

With so many “silver surfers” thronging the World Wide Web many are making the motto “Help Yourself “their own and turning to providers of online Kredit. These transfer lower overhead costs directly to their customers and thus allow these applicants to move closer to the realization of their retirement dreams and kiss penury goodbye.

Silver Surfer – Why It’s Cool to be Over 60!

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009
For those approaching retirement, it sums up neatly, and in such a positive way, what the future holds in store. No longer should terms such as ‘the grey generation’ be used to describe this large section of the population. Retirement is not ‘grey’ but bright and vibrant. ‘The future’s bright, the future is …..’ as one well known advert puts it but it could easily be used for a vision of the future of many people entering retirement, fit, healthy and better off than their equivalents of previous generations. Children off their hands, spare cash, mortgages paid off and free time, this generation has never had it so good. So the term ‘ Silver Surfer’ conjures up the picture of far off places, living new experiences, being active and enjoying life and why not. After all, isn’t this what we all work for?

But there is a fly lurking in the ointment, or sun tan cream for that matter. Why then, when life is starting to look up, is it so difficult to find a travel insurance policy that does not penalise us for being older than the average. Generally, if in good health, insurers will provide the same rates for anyone between the ages of 18 and 65 but boy, once this threshold is breached, it’s open season on anyone the wrong side of this notional bracket. Try and find an annual travel insurance policy when you are past 70, they exist but at a price. The simple fact is that those ‘over 65’ are deemed a greater risk for cancelling a holiday before going, curtailing a holiday once abroad and incurring higher medical costs but it is time that policies were more tailored to the individual rather than the group. There are many 70 year olds fitter than twenty something’s and less at risk on their cruise down the Danube than the bright young things strutting their stuff on the dance floor in Ayia Napa but it was ever thus!

There is no easy answer except it pays to shop around and there are travel insurance providers for the ‘over 65’ age group on the market which also provide cover for pre-existing medical conditions travel insurance. But don’t allow the extra premium you may have to pay to enjoy your new found lifestyle dissuade you from taking out adequate cover in the first place. A hefty medical bill will certainly drain those hot vibrant colours back to grey in no time if you do decide to take the risk of having no cover.

HAITI: THE MAGIC LAND

By Alejandro Guevara Onofre

INTRODUCTION

In 1492 Christopher Columbus wrote about Haiti: “The most beautiful in the world”. Certainly, Haiti is a wonderful country in the Caribbean. I think that has a special beauty, with a geography and traditional culture that is totally different from all the other countries in Latin America.

Now, this essay is a historical information about Haiti, the first black republic in the modern history and one of the poorest nations on Earth. Each chapter provides details on history, economy, biographies, sport, awards, foreign relations, culture and other important aspects of Haiti. The people that don’t know Haiti very much think that Haiti is only one of the world’s poorest countries, but the Island is known for its traditional culture, hospitality, superstitions, history. Furthermore, Haiti is the home to National Park History, one of the ancient wonders of the world, and renowned women such as Edwidge Danticat and Michaëlle Jean were born there.

Since then, the dictatorships have destroyed Haitian society, economy, ecology and sport. Since 1950, two million Haitian people emigrated to the United States and other countries. Haitian-American arrived from Haiti with nothing more than their clothes. If we compare the Haiti of today to Haiti of thirty years ago, we see a change: a new multiparty democracy. Today, a vast part of the Third World and more than a billion people are under dictatorships.

Eventually, I would like to finish my introduction with a message by Albert Mangones: “Haiti is unique in history, going directly from slavery to nationhood”.

CHRONOLOGY:

1492: Columbus discovered Haiti in the 15th Century.

1520-1697: Haiti is a Spanish territory. In the late 1500 and early 1600, African slaves flocked to Island.

1697-1790: Haiti is a French colony. After 16th Century, Haiti became the most important French colony in the Americas. Island´s export to Europe included sugar, coffee and corn. The beauty of Haiti is recognized by the French in the mid-1700 Century, when they called it “Pearl the Caribbean”.

1790-1803: During the French colonization slaves suffers from maltreatment. By the late 1790, pro-independence demonstrations. An Anti-slavery movement under Toussaint L´Ouverture began. L´Ouverture is one of the most important black leaders in the history.During this period of time, Haitian slaves attack villages. Anti-French protests riots brutally suppressed. By the late 1803, under leadership of Jean Jacques Dessalines, Haiti army defeated the French forces at the Battle of Vertieres.

1804-1806:A French colony for more than hundred years, Haiti becomes independent, one of the most important events in the history. Jean Jacques Dessalines became the first president of new republic of Haiti, the first black republic in the modern history. Dessalines is the “Father of Modern Haiti”. Haiti occupies the Western third of Hispaniola, the second-largest Island in the Caribbean.

1804-1820: Unfortunately; Haiti is divided into two zones. Northern Haiti is occupied by Henri Christopher, who is named Emperor, while the north is occupied by Alexander Petion. Petion is probably the greatest Haitian politician who ever lived.

1880: Haiti has one of the richest ecosystems in the Caribbean.

1900: Haiti´s modern political has been tumultuous, marked by dictatorships

1915-1934: Haiti has not had an effective national government Invasion by United States forces. US troops sent to Haiti during civil sub-war.

1918: The Presidential Palace, one of the best national palaces in the world, is originally designed by the Haitian Georges Bassan. Bassan is inspired to White House Washington.

1926: Emily Greene Balch, a human rights activist, went to Haiti.

1928: Cator is the only Haitian ever to win olympic silver medal. After, Haitian athlete Sylvio Cator breaks the men’s long jump record in Paris. Cator was given a hero’s welcome when he returned to his country.

1937: In the Dominican Republic, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered national troops to massacre of 20000 Haitian emigrants.

1940-1950: Haiti is one of the most popular travel destinations in the Caribbean.

1944: Dewitt Peters, an American school-teacher, founded the Centre d’Art in Port -au-Prince Since 1944, Centre d’Art became the centre of the Haitian painting. It is now one of Haiti´s biggest tourist attractions, and every year thousands of people came to see the paintings and other work of Haitian art.

1945: Haiti becomes the 26th member of the United Nations in October.

1956: Haiti establishes diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

1956: Daniel Fignolé is President of the Provisional Council and Head of State of Haiti

1957-1971:After working for a time as a traditional doctor, Francois Duvalier became one of Haiti’s most famous doctors. In 1957, Duvalier is elected President of the Republic of Haiti. President Duvalier announced: “My government will guarantee the exercise of liberty to all Haitians”. Francois Duvalier, also known for his nickname “Papa Doc”, emerged as Head of State and quickly gained nearly absolute power. In 1961 “Papa Doc” rewrote the National Constitution. After, he became the first “President for Eternity of Haiti”. In the 1960s and 1970s “Papa Doc” popularizes superstitions ideas to Haiti through a series of important voodoo rites. The Duvalier dictatorship instituted rig press censorship. International agencies accuse government of grave human rights abuses. His regime of terror resulted in the deaths of least 30000 Haitian. The Island is one of the most dangerous countries in the Third World.

1957-1981: Haitian First Lady Simone Ovide became one of the most dominant women in the history of Haiti. Simone, wife of the most famous dictator of Haiti, gained in influence and power through corruption and crime.

1957-1989: For many decades, Haiti does not have diplomatic relations with the USSR, People’s Republic of China, Cuba, Hungary, South Africa and East Germany.

1960: The Tonton Macoutes, the brutal secret police, initiated a “Haitian genocide” in which political prisoners were tortured and executed.

1964: Joseph Eduard Gaetjens, the idol of millions of Haitians, is arrested and killed by the Tonton Macoutes, the sinister Haitian secret police. Like John Barnes (Jamaica) and Everald “Gally” Cummings (Trinidad Tobago), he was a great footballer in the Caribbean. After, Gaetjens become a world symbol of the struggle against dictatorship in the Third World. He had dual Haitian and American nationality and played at 1950 World Cup for the United States. Son of Haitian mother and Belgium father, he played for many clubs in the United States. The year 1950 was a very important year for Gaetjens: the United States beat England 1-0, the birthplace of the modern football.

1964: Francois Duvalier changed the national flag. Black and red are the colors chosen by Duvalier. Black, which is similar to the Angolan flag, represents the descendants of the patriot Francois Toussaint L’Ouverture and is also the traditional color of the Haitian people. While, red symbolizes the country`s independence. But the original flag, used since 1803, was removed in 1986 by order of the new government.

1966: Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia, arrives in Port-au-Prince. Under the leadership of Dictator Francois Duvalier, many African countries maintain official diplomatic relations with Haiti.

1967: The Comedians, a film by British director Peter Glenville, inspired in the cruel Haitian dictatorship by the Duvalier family.

1971: After Duvalier’s death, power passed to his son Jean Claude Duvalier, the man who became known throughout the world as “Baby Doc”. Baby Doc is as dictatorial as his father. Haiti is ruled by iron hand. Duvalier, best known for his anticommunist political, is omnipresent. Many opposition leaders were arrested. He is accused of human rights abuses. Thousand of Haitian people fled the country. Corruption is prevalent at all levels of government. The health system is one of the worst in the Americas.

1974: The sporting system is one of the worst in the Third World, but Haiti qualified for the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Haiti beat Trinidad-Tobago in the World Cup qualifiers. Is one of the greatest sporting moment, in the chronology, comparing it to something like Sylvio Cator, who won a silver medal in long jump in the 1928 Olympics Games in Holland.

1975: In El Salvador, Miss Haiti, Gerthie David, is named first runner up at Miss Universe Pageant… transmitting live to millions by CBS. After, Gerthie David is acclaimed in Port-au-Prince as a national heroine. Miss Haiti competed with 71 other women from around the world for the title of Miss Universe, including Miss USA, Summer Barthollomew.

1980: Like Canada, West Germany South Korea and Kenya, Haiti boycott the Moscow Olympic Games in protest for Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

1980-1986: Jean-Claude Duvalier, Haiti’s longtime dictator, married Michelle Bennett, an aristocratic lady. A little more than three months later, Bennett-Duvalier becomes First Lady of Haiti. Like Eva Peron (Argentina) or Jiang Qing (People’s Republic of China), she was a woman with great power. Michelle Bennett promoted her mulatto countrymen to positions of leadership in the dictatorship at his expense of the African-Haitians.

1982: The National History Park (La Citadelle Laferriere, Sans Souci Palace and Ramiers) is designated as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Like Machu Picchu (Peru) and Angkor What (Cambodia), the National History Park is considered among the wonders of the world.

1982: Ronald Agenor wins a gold medal in men’s tennis singles at the Central American and Caribbean Sports Games La Havana. He captures the hearts of the Island.

1983: Pope John Paul arrives in Haiti for a visit. “Things most change here”, said John Paul II.

1986: As Jean-Claude consolidated his power, he consistently refused to consider constitutional reform. The insurrection against the dictator Jean Claude Duvalier began…Antigovernment protesters in the capital. Many deaths, injuries and arrests. Seeming end to long Haitian dictatorship with fall of Duvalier regime.

1987: Haiti has one of the America’s rates of HIV infection

1987: The New Constitution restored many of the liberties abolished by the Duvalier family. The National Constitution recognizes both French and Creole as official languages. A new opposition emerged under Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

1991-1995: Like Equatorial Guinea, Cuba and North Korea, Haiti has one of the most serious human rights problems in the Third World.

1993: United Nations imposed economic sanctions on Haiti, one of the most densely populated nations in the Americas.

1994: Peaceful occupation by United States forces to restore democratic electoral system. Raoul Cedras and his family went into exile in Panama City. Aristide was restored to power.

He in 2000 officially became a citizen of Haiti.

2000: Haiti is one of the thirty poorest countries in the Third World.

2000-2001: The elections were boycotted by the main opposition political parties. Aristide was again elected President. Widespread violent in Haiti allege that Aristide’s election victory is fraudulent. Total political censorship exists in national media.

2004: This year Haiti is celebrating the 200th Anniversary of their National Independence. President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of Haiti flees to Central African Republic following anti-government demonstrations. Haiti has one of the most violent conflict areas in the Americas. After, UN troops sent to Haiti during civil sub-war.

2006: Rene Preval is sworn in as President of Haiti. Since the peaceful transfer of power in February, Haiti is the newest democracy in the Third World.

ECONOMY

Like Bangladesh, Uganda or Tanzania, Haiti is one of the poorest countries on Earth. In 1997, the Haiti’s economic growth rate (real GDP) per capita was U$ 1,300. GDP per capita for Namibia, Botswana and Equatorial Guinea are higher than for Haiti. In the country 4 million people living on less than U$2 a day. More than 6 million of the Haiti’s population still does not have access to potable water and electricity. For years of dictatorships had left the country’s economy in ruins. The country dependent on international aid. Several hundred thousand farm workers migrate each year to Dominican Republic.

In 1997, total exports for the year were U$110 million, while total imports were US$ 486 million. Since 1804, the US market has been the most important export destination for Haiti. Nearly 80 percent of Haiti’s total exports are destined for the United States. Haiti’s exports include sisal, mangoes, coffee, cotton, bauxite, and sugar. The Island’s imports from the United States include cement, oil, food, machinery and transport equipment. France has been the second largest exports destination for Haitian products.

In the past, the tourism industry occupied an eminent place in the Haitian economy, but several political problems have blocked tourism. Haiti was the first country in the Caribbean to promote tourism in an accelerated form. Haiti is a small country with vast mountains, tropical beaches and beautiful historic buildings.

CULTURE

Like Katherine Dunham, Lillian Hellman, W.B. Seabrook, Erik Leonard Ekman, Alejo Carpentier, Selden Rodman, Noel Coward and Angeline Jolie, many people say that Haiti is the most beautiful country in the Caribbean. Known as the “Magic Land”, Haiti is famous for its culture. Certainly, Haiti its culture, its superstitions and its music. The superstitions or voodoo plays a profound role in the lives of many Haitians. The voodoo was introduced into Haiti in the late 16th Century. Haiti is also famous for its painting, and finally for its ruins…for example the Sans Souci Palace, the most famous ruins in the Caribbean. Exactly, this enigmatic palace is considered a Cultural Heritage for Humanity by UNESCO. Originally constructed by black slaves, now Sans Souci is one of Haiti’s main tourist attractions.

Since the late 1940s, Haitian painting, best known as “naïve art” or “intuitive art”, is famous all around the World. The most important figure was Hector Hyppolite. His work made its biggest splash in the United States in the 20th Century. Other artists known internationally include Rigaud Benoit, Castera Bazile, Joseph Jean-Giles and Jean-Baptista Bottlex.Haiti is famous for its traditional sculpture. The best Haitian sculptor is Albert Mangoes.

FAMOUS HAITIAN

Nelust Wyclef Jean (singer/Haitian-American): Original member of 1990s hip hop group The Fugees. Wyclef Jean is probably the most popular Haitian singer of all time. Jean was born in Croix des Bouquets (Haiti) on October 17, 1972. When he was just ten years old, he moved to the United States. Under leadership of Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill, The Fugees had several hits in the 1990s, including The Score (The Score album sold 6 million copies). Since 1997, Wyclef Jean, as soloist, became well-known on the international music scene. Like songwriter and producer, Jean collaborated with superstars as Santana, Withney Houston, Mick Jagger,Bono,Tevin Cambpell, Bounty Killer, Eric Benet, Sarah Connor, Claudette Ortiz, Tarkan, Michael Jackson, Youssou N´Dor, Shakira, Olga Tañon, Carlos Ponce and Julio Voltio. During the last seven years, he has sold more than 10 millions albums worldwide. In 2002, his single Masquerade was a great success.

Since then, Wyclef Jean is a man that always works with love for Haiti, one of the World’s poorest countries. Recently, he makes perhaps his best work: “Yele Haiti”, a foundation which works for the human development in the Island. Like Miriam Makeba in South Africa or Bianca Jagger in Nicaragua, Jean loves his roots. In an interview for Magazine, Wyclef Jean discussed about Haitian roots: “I am 100% Haitian. I am proud to be Haitian. I still have my Haitian passport. I represent Haiti in everything that I do. Every head in the industry knows that I am Haitian…they know what I’m about. I was Haitian forst. Haitian till die!”, said Jean.

SPORTS

Like in Brazil or Italy, the football is the most popular sport in Haiti. Certainly, the national pastime is the football. A different of the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, the Haitian people don’t like the baseball. In the 20th Century, football became the most popular sport in the Island, thanks to such heroes as Sylvio Cator, Joseph Gaetjens and Emmanuel Sanon. In 1974 Haiti qualified for the World Cup in Germany.

Emmanuel Sanon was one of the Haiti’s most popular players and played at the 1974 World Cup. Cator returned home to a hero’s welcome. From 1928 to 1930, he was record man in the long jump. Cator was a marvelous jumper and footballer. He also played an important role in popularizing football in the Island (it was the captain of Haitian National Team).

Since then, he is an example for young people in Haiti. He died in November 1938, but today the people of Haiti still think of him with respect. Many years after Cator’s death, the National Stadium in Por-au-Prince was renamed in his honor. Monday, December 21st, 2009
Irons are not big deals these days, they come at as a low price as Rs 170/-. Pretty cool enough for anyone to buy them. The main point is which one to buy? It’s a known fact; everyone needs a Iron, in days when ironman is not at work, in emergencies when you do not have time to send clothes for ironing and in conditions where one just needs to iron their clothes.

The good news is – there is a whole range of irons found in the market from which to choose and that too from the best makers of electrical equipments of the country. One can even choose from the imported irons which too are not that costly. The line of iron models include steam irons, cordless irons, electrical steam irons, cordless steam irons, travel irons and dry irons to take care of your daily ironing needs. To choose which suits your requirement is something you need to know; e.g. if you use a lot of cotton or cotton blended clothes, then steam iron would be the best as it irons while splashing water on the clothes.

However, if you travel a lot and just need to take out the creases than a simple travel iron would be the best. The choice of the company whose iron you would purchase, again is a matter of your choice. In the market you will find irons from Panasonic, Bajaj, Lexus, Philips, Glen, Kenstar, Inalsa, Bajaj, Rico, Black and Decker and so on. All of these are well known companies which sell irons with guarantee. Purchase the one which you think is best for you. One can buy these from any of the leading online stores to get price offs on MRP.

The good thing about the upcoming online stores is that you don’t have to go the market to buy the irons, instead you can choose them online sitting at your home. Once chosen, order for them online and pay for it once the iron reaches your home. You can also pay through your Credit Card using the best payment gateway Paypal online. Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
The Nokia N95 8GB is a direct upgrade to the original Nokia N95, it packs in some extra features and remodelled design and has today been released onto the pay as you go network.

This is good news for consumers as currently 1 in 4 people in the UK fail to pass a credit check to get a mobile phone on contract with the networks.

The pay as you go scheme means that the customer pays far more for the phone upfront but does not have the expense of ongoing line rental charges, they simply buy top-up cards or order extra talktime over the phone as and when they need to.

The calls can work out a little more expensive than the bundled minutes that come with the pay monthly deals but for low users and those that just cannot gain a contract phone the pay as you go system is a godsend.

The Nokia N95 8GB is one of the more expensive handsets on pay as you go due to the high specification and sheer number of features and technology it has to offer, the N-Series Nokia range in general is classed as the manufacturers showcase for thier very best handsets.

The Nokia N95 (8GB) mobile phone has arrived with a new look a bigger screen and an amazing array of breath-taking features. Store all multi-media files and up to 2000 songs or 166 albums with the impressive 8GB of internal memory.

Michigan Wolverines Tickets - Coach Chizik to Face New Challenges

Monday, December 14th, 2009
The Wolverines have been having some kind of a rough run over the last some months. They have been losing some close games and in some games, they have thrown in the towel even before the game started. Now, any coach coming in for such a team would need to have a decent recent record. But with Chizik, the recent record was anything but acceptable. For his former team Iowa, he left the team when the record was at 5-19, 10 defeats in the last 10 games spoiling what would have been an otherwise good season for the Wolverines.

The athletic director of the team though believes that this was one of the positive moves for the team. For a team like the Wolverines and especially at the stage in which they were in, Chizik’s induction would bring in a lot of motivation and energy to the team. Chizik himself is a high energy person, so infusing a bit of that in the Wolverines would not be a tough task for him, one would assume. On the other hand, Chizik himself is happy, because in his long coaching career, he feels that this was one place where he would have loved coaching.

On the field though, the set of problems facing Chizik are one of its kinds. The players are struggling to find their feet in a very competitive league. More than their skills, one believes that the players are suffering from a lack of confidence. Couple this with the absence of some key players from the lineup and you have a classic recipe for a struggling team, which can do nothing right at all. It is these challenges that Chizik has to find a way to work around. One thing is for sure ? None of them are easy as they may look. But Chizik can take heart from the fact that he has been through all of this with different teams before.

It may look like that all Chizik has to do is to apply his skills and get the best out of his players. May sound easy and it would have, had Chizik taken up the assignment before the last 10 games at Iowa. Defeats in all those 10 games and his inability to do anything to arrest the slide have put a question mark on the credibility of Chizik. One thing is sure though, Chizik will do all what he can to get the Wolverines on a winning run. And with him, you can see the results sooner than later.

How Chizik fares as the new coach of the Wolverines is anybody’s guess and maybe only time will be able to tell if they are on the right track or not? Whatever happens though, Chizik would need unparalleled support of his players and the fans.

Is the Latest Batman Movie – the Dark Knight Any Good

Saturday, December 12th, 2009
Is the latest Batman movie – The Dark Knight any good. Well, if the box office is anything to go by it can’t be all that bad! For my money, it’s simply the best, most original Batman movie so far. Batman The Dark Knight is a careering behemoth of a blockbuster. It carries on from the re-modelled Batman Begins and finds Bruce Wayne (he’s Batman you know), played by Christian Bale battling with his old adversary the Joker played by Heath Ledger. Of course, the original movie Joker was played fantastically by Jack Nicholson, but if you prefer your villains darker and certainly more sinister then you are going to love Ledgers portrayal – oh and look out for Two Face as well. The only unfortunate thing about Ledger is that, for obvious reasons, he won’t be able to play the role again – internet source have suggested that Johnny Depp might take over the role in future outings – I for one would love to see that!

Batman The Dark Knight also introduces a lot of new cool Bat-stuff to us. Batman has a new vehicle called a Batpod. Within the film it is actually a detachment from the Batmobile (now called the Tumbler) after that vehicle is catastrophically damaged by an RPG fired at close range by the Joker. Batman also has a cool new Batsuit. The original BatSuit was changed both for story and production reasons. During the production of Batman Begins, Christian Bale and the stunt men were constantly in danger of overheating because of the type of foam latex used to create the suit, so the new suit is made of polyurethane; it’s a lot cooler and more durable, despite being eight pounds heavier.

So what about the villains? Well, obviously there’s the joker – played magnificently by Ledger. He treats a stunningly staged bank robbery like his private video game with accomplices in Joker masks, blood spurting and inevitably only one winner. This Joker is a million miles from Jack Nicholson’s funny role the Batman movie. This Joker is a mad shadowy figure and Ledger doesn’t wear any of the all too common prosthetics to make his character come alive; his face is caked with mouldy makeup that highlights the red scar of a grin, the grungy hair and the yellowing teeth of a hound fresh out of hell. As the Joker says, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stranger.” But if you think he’s bad – just wait till you see Harvey Two Face – this guys on another planet – but I’ll leave that one for you to find out for yourselves!

So, there you have it Batman The Dark Knight has it all. Fast action, great gadgets, deep, sinister characters and an ongoing struggle between the forces of darkness and .. well more darkness really. What more could you want?

So is Batman The Dark Knight and good – you betcha it is, as they say, if you don’t see another film all year – make sure you see this one!
